Master Xiao Ru-Song (1922~1992) was born in Beipu, Hsinchu County. Master Xiao taught in the Hsinchu County area for nearly 40 years, since 1950. His meticulous teaching style and a rule to clean the classroom before he started his “Xiao-ish Arts Lessons” always impressed his students. Master Xiao had shown his outstanding talents in composition and amazing techniques of using colors in the Tai-Yang Art Exhibition, yet he never stopped reading, studying and absorbing new concepts from Western art. He continued to self-learn Impressionism, Cubism and Fauvism and integrate drawing lines and brush strokes of traditional eastern calligraphy to create his own unique painting style. He also won numerous honors in the Provincial Art Exhibition, Tai-Yang Art Exhibition, Qing-Yun Art Exhibition and Provincial Teacher’s Art Exhibition. His works even received the approval the Provincial Art Exhibition.

Since Master Xiao Ru-Song passed away in 1992, his residence had been neglected, forgotten and abandoned. It was lamentable that this historical site looked like a ruin. The Cultural Affairs Bureau of Hsinchu County, seeing the preservation of cultural heritage as important, thinks Master Hsiao’s contribution in the fields of arts and education is sufficient to serve as a role model for the people of Taiwan. “Xiao Ru-Song’s Residence” was not merely Master Xiao’s private space to store his personal items, but also where his artistic life began. From a macro-perspective, “Xiao Ru-Song’s Residence” can be considered a common space that stores a huge amount of memories belonging to the people of Hsinchu County.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau of Hsinchu County has put a lot of effort into the planning of “Xiao Ru-Song Art Park”. In May, 2004, the preparation committee was established and scholars, experts and local gentlemen were all invited for discussion. Through investigation & planning, review and renovation by scholars and experts, “Xiao Ru-Song’s Residence” was expected to be restored to its original look with few deviations from the original. Now, Xiao Ru-Song’s residence is alive. The old dormitory nearby has been renovated as well to provide additional artistic functions, such as the exhibition of artistic works, a location for artistic activities and exchanges, the organizing conferences/symposiums, and an open space of arts for the public. “Xiao Ru-Song Art Park”, following the model of “private management of public management” or “public productive enterprise”, completed the public tender and renovation was completed in 2008. The art park has since been operated and managed by a private enterprise – Sunny Art Museum.
